photo > Alex Diamond Unmasked | feat. Mimi Diamond
"Being Alex Diamond" was a photographic project that started in 2007 and was exhibited between 12/2008 and 2/2010 in Miami, Hamburg, Basel and Barcelona. The final photos were Lambdaprints (sizes between 18 x 18 cm and 80 x 100 cm), that were painted and drawn over.
The project was covered in a book published by Gudberg Verlag, Hamburg, October 2009.
Based upon the fact that the artist Alex Diamond is a fictional character, Diamond has always been playing with the allures of total anonyminity and thus has been turning away from establishing an artist personality.
The works created for the aforementioned exhibitions and the book were the results of a project study entitled “Being Alex Diamond ”, an intensive dialogue about the questions that circle around issues of one’s own identity, the power of the ego, the generation of personality, social role models, and a sort of natural schizophrenia as well.
Alex Diamond revealed almost 40 artworks that do not only mix up photography and painting but also reality and fantasy. Diamond’s series of photopaintings exhibits the artist himself slipping into altering bodies, taking over different personalities and re-inventing the fictional persona over and over again. Almost 20 different models slipped into the character of Diamond. Their faces - however – were always hidden behind what has become some kind of Diamond’s trademark: The furry mask with all its tentacles.
While the story of Alex Diamond has continued with the known radicalism and speed, and that we saw the foundation of The Alex Diamond Mining Company 2010 as well as the development of a new direction in the work with woodcarvings, printings and large scale installations (wood, wood, wood), it was time to take a look back at the "Being Alex Diamond"-project. And reconsider ...
... so that now, for the first time ever, the mask came off.
... thankyou so much, lovely & gorgeous Mimi Diamond.
